This post has nothing to do with Warhammer, or any other game – online or offline.  I’m going to gripe about Virginia.

I moved to Virginia from New Jersey about 5 years ago.  To this day, I have not found a single diner, bakery, or deli outside of the DC metro area.  What’s wrong with this picture?

Seriously, you can’t drive for 20 miles without hitting a diner in Jersey (unless you’re in the middle of the Pine Barrens).  And there is some sort of unwrittenlaw that these diners must be owned and run by Greek families.  Since almost every diner in Jersey has decent fare at a decent price, maybe they’re on to something.  The caveat to that unwritten law is that fully half of all diners must have a real pastry chef on the staff.  I’m not kidding about this.  You can bet that on every trip up to see old friends or family, I stop by the Spinning Wheel diner or the All Seasons diner, and not for nostalgic reasons, either.

Bakeries are a bit more rare, but they are present, tucked into back streets and less populated areas.   Inevitably, they have a wedding cake displayed in the front window, generally made of wood with plaster-of-paris “frosting.”  Still, there’s nothing like a loaf a freshly baked honest-to-God rye bread.  Heck, it’s not easy to find even supermarket brands of rye bread in Virginia.  How am I supposed to make a proper ham and swiss sandwich without rye bread?

Delis don’t even exist here.  Forget about it.  You’re stuck with more supermarket junk.  No Italian or Polish delis serving up eggplant parm, baked ziti, fresh sauerkraut out of the barrel, or fresh kielbasa (real stuff, not the junk sold next to the pre-packaged cold cuts and hot dogs).  Healthy foods?  Hell, no.  But, damn, are they good.

Well, enough of that… we now return you to your regularly scheduled Warhammer blog.
